In our previous article “LEGO Community in the Time of Covid,” we mentioned that build challenges have become a popular and excellent way to connect with the global AFOL community. One such build challenge is the LEGO Minifigure Habitats Challenge hosted by @brickfambuilds on Instagram, which encourages builders to make habitats based on a given theme. Since our article was published last year, these challenges have only gotten bigger and better! In 2021, there were 2,605 habitats built by 330 participants all over the world. We sat down with Jen who runs @brickfambuilds to chat about her awesome build challenge and its effect on the AFOL Instagram community. Inez: Hi Jen! Before we talk about the minifigure habitats, could you tell us something about yourself and your LEGO journey? Jen: My LEGO journey is brief: My 6.5-year-old twins loved Duplo when they were small. So naturally when they were around...

For each issue of BrickJournal Magazine, the BrickNerd team creates instructions for a LEGO mini-model to go with the theme of the cover story. For their recent issue about New Hashima, BrickNerd contributor Dan Ko created a speeder bike to populate the cyberpunk city. New Hashima Spinner Speeder For the New Hashima collab, I wasn’t able to participate and send any LEGO builds physically, so I wanted to create a design for something small that anyone could build and populate in their cubes to add life to the vibrant cyberpunk city. That’s when I came up with the spinner speeder idea: a bike template that could be changed into whatever color was needed. I packed the speeder with as much detail as I could in a small space, utilizing every stud and only XX number of pieces. One of my favorite parts of the build is using two 3679 turntable plates...
