Medieval houses are a popular motif in LEGO fan creations, but that comes at a price – even though the quality is generally very high among these builds, there is less and less room for originality. Obviously, this build by César Soares is something more. The Green Fish Inn does not look like a place where most people would want to spend their time in real life if presented with a choice, but it does look cool. The textures and exotic colours look great, most notably the recently returned legendary dark turquoise used as some strange mold all across the building. The roof is great, with a few patched holes and a nice mix of tiles and slopes that make for some subtle details. Both the island and trans-black lake add a great deal to the atmosphere of the scene. The National Gallery of Art itself is a wonderful piece of architecture all on its own. Builder wrtyler constructed a brick-built replica of the West Building that’s more than worthy of an official LEGO Architecture set and then some. It’s amazing what a little lighting can do to bring life into a simple structure. The actual West Building has at least 3 acres of skylights covering its roof. According to wrtyler, it was a challenge to replicate that roof with LEGO transparent tiles while having the right structure in place to hold it up. At least 500 transparent cheese wedge pieces were used in total for both wings to give the intended effect. We singled out Jeff Friesen’s Cityscapes as our 2017 Creation of the Year. If you’ve missed it then, these are still very much worth a look, and even if you’ve seen them, they’re so mesmerising that you may find something you missed earlier on. It’s almost soothing and appealing to let your eyes wander around these intricate builds. We could not resist reaching out to have a deeper discussion with Jeff to understand the mind of an artist that could create something so different and unique with the very same bricks all of us see and build with every day. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, e.g. where are you based, your LEGO history, and your work (LEGO/Photography and real life if it is different)? I’m an award-winning photographer based in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, which is on Vancouver Island. I have vivid memories of playing with LEGO...

The success of the last year’s LEGO NinjaGo 70620 NINJAGO City exclusive set has proved that LEGO fans – both young and adult – are ready for huge and elaborate LEGO sets expanding the boundaries of the regular line-ups. Even though the LEGO Ninjago Movie premiered last September, the second direct-to-consumer set is just to be released this Summer. LEGO NinjaGo 70657 NINJAGO City Docks has been recently listed in certain online stores, and now we’re having the first look at the next addition to the amazing City of NinjaGo. unfortunately, there’s still no information about the pieces count or the price of the set, but we expect it to be around $250/250€. The build is fully modular, containing several modules with detailed interiors. Additionally, the back of the box proves that 70657 NINJAGO City Docks can be attached to 70620 NINJAGO City just like the LEGO Creator Modular buildings form...

There is something mysterious about a build where you’re unable to immediately tell what inspired the builder to create such an enigmatic scene. It seems simple enough, but there’s always a hidden meaning. Even just the title of this build (“Vampires”) left me wondering and compelled me to reach out to the builder, WeNoGrayD to learn more. What struck me most about this build was the techniques WeNoGrayD used for the dress to give it a very sleek finished look. Also, the way the heels and feet are constructed is simply ingenious! The overall scene itself and the intricately designed lamp post emote a very sorrowful scene. The builder explained this creation was inspired by a Russian rock band and a tale of two vampires pursuing a lady in red for a hundred nights, to the point of exhaustion. And in case you’ve not figured it out just yet, this is...

Sometimes simple creations can be the most fun and interesting. This one by Eddy Summers is so cute and clever that I’m jealous I didn’t have the idea! I have built a large scale micro-build diorama myself, but there is something really neat about this small snapshot. You can probably imagine making a whole bunch of them, in this perfect square shape, lined up in a row. Of course, with LEGO and a little imagination, the possibilities are endless! I feel the nostalgia for Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, one of my favorite games as a kid, with Anton Sundström’s build of Kirby’s artist ally Adeleine. She has the ability to make her paintings real and often paints the maximum health tomato, like Anton portrayed here. In LEGO bricks, Adeleine is just as lively and adorable as she is in game. Decay is a powerful tool for storytelling and Andreas Lenander has used it to great effect with this old, abandoned AT-AT. Of all Star Wars vehicles, the AT-AT has the most iconic and expressive appearance in a destroyed state. The rust and slight overgrowth place the walker in an environment without a need for a larger LEGO scene, although Andreas has hinted that a diorama might actually be made in the future. I love how the holes look just like metal plates caving under their own weight, as well as the damaged leg and all the bits dangling from under the body. The skeleton in the corner is also a nice touch, and I like that the builder made it from scratch instead of using a skeleton minifigure. Tēnā koe e hoa (Greetings. Hello to you, friend.) from Jed Cameron of New Zealand with his “Not 100%  historically accurate” Early European Settlers arriving at a Māori Village. Inspired by a treasure trove of colonial art he found online, Jed has done a great job recreating the look and feel of a pre-colonial Māori wharenui (large communal house). Jed used an upside down quiver as the koruru (carved head) at the apex of the meeting house to great effect. I love how the smooth tiles illustrate a well-trodden path through the village and the Pouwhenua (carved wooden posts) mark the boundary of the village. This is a lovely little build and a wonderful representation of a crucial point in New Zealand history. Kai Pai! (Well Done!) The post Haere Mai! Come Here!
