Something Wicked this way comes… Yes, Wicked, with a capital W! Following the theatrical release of the Disney film last year, another wave of LEGO sets is releasing this September 1. Most interesting among these is 75685 Emerald City Wall Art, a 1,518-piece display set that you can decorate your walls with, yellow brick road and all. It’s barely been a few months since Nintendo launched the Switch 2, continuing their long line of handheld (well, kind of) gaming consoles. Of course, it all started in 1989 (or 1990 in the US) with the Game Boy. The latter is the subject of a new set in the LEGO Super Mario line: 72046 Game Boy, a 421-piece set with a price tag of US $59.99 | CAN $79.99 | UK £54.99. Two buildable Game Pak cartridges are included: Super Mario Land and, although this is listed as part of the Super Mario theme, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening also makes an appearance. Earlier this year, we saw a Republic starfighter that hadn’t been seen in LEGO form for several years hit the market. Now it’s not groundhog day – but on August 1, we are getting another LEGO Star Wars Republic starfighter that hasn’t been seen on shelves since 2008! This time, it’s 75432 V-19 Torrent Starfighter; a craft that appeared early on in the Clone Wars animated series, but was seldom seen subsequently. With 567 pieces, it has an RRP of US $64.99 | CAN $84.99 | UK £59.99; you might see it on third-party retail sites like eBay or Amazon, too. Let’s see if it will receive a torrent of praise! We recently shared a round-up of LEGO castles by master mason Ben Hauger, but we turned around for a minute and not only did he make a few more castles, he changed the foundation. Yes, these two new castles have all the great features of his previous ones, but now, we get a modular base. If the forest setting isn’t to your liking, you get to change it now. The modular segments combine to make a beautifully irregular base for the main structure. Take a look at the different sections of the forest. An artificer’s work inscribing runes is no easy task, as recreated in this LEGO still life by greenarj. It requires precision tools, enchanted ink, an ancient tome, and a bottle of mysterious liquid… to steady the hand. Creating a scene this convincing from plastic bricks is another kind of magic, one that grenarj wields like a wizard. That bottle in particular, which integrates Spinjitzu Jay’s cyclone, is brilliant. The blade is filled with NPU, like a silver dish nested between wheel arches for the pommel. Consider us entranced. Every LEGO model tells a story, sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes it’s mysterious, and sometimes it’s beautiful, like this kingfisher flying out of a deck of cards, holding the gold key of clubs in its beak, built by BigBrickStan for the latest Biocup LEGO building contest. Plant parts supplement the usual wing elements in two shades of blue, and the keys for all four suits are created with minimal parts. From Software has fully embraced co-op with their latest release, Elden Ring Nightreign, all but requiring players to team up with a couple of friends in order to take down waves of bosses. So it’s only fitting that to bring down some of Elden Ring’s most iconic enemies in LEGO form, a team-up is in order. Joe (jnj_bricks) leads the charge against Godrick the Grafted, the first big mandatory boss in your journey through the Lands Between. Joe perfectly captures the decaying Stormveil Castle, especially the shattered road that subtly undulates off the LEGO grid. While he doesn’t often build characters, Joe nails Godrick’s grafted form with his monstrous arm. I’m having flashbacks to the first (and second, and tenth…) time I battled the boss. We’re a bit more than halfway through the year so far and we’ve seen some amazing LEGO creations from talented builders around the globe. Normally, we’d highlight a top ten list at the end of the year and we still will. But let’s take the time to scope out what our prospects are thus far based on views and see if they remain at the top of the heap once we celebrate the new year with fireworks, champagne, kazoos and whatnot.
