I’ve lost count of how many LEGO versions of Porco Rosso’s iconic seaplane we’ve featured here on TBB, going way back to Uspez Morbo’s Savoia S.21 I wrote about in 2008. And yet I enjoy every version we’ve highlighted, not least this fantastic microscale version by Marcin Otreba, complete with stand and tiny Adriatic seascape. A miniature Porco pilot may try to steal the show here, but the details I love most are the little contrails emerging from the engine exhaust and the rounded cowling on the seaplane’s bow. The same goes for paintings, like the work of artist Jakub Różalski who creates alternate universes on canvas. His classic style of paintings often combines a rural landscape with mechs in the background. These mechs often look peaceful but you can feel the silent threat of the machines in the distance. His creative work has been used for the board game Scythe and the recent real-time strategy game Iron Harvest. The AFOL world is a great, global community united by our love of LEGO. Within that greater community, there are many smaller interest groups, from local LUGs to people interested in specific themes like Castle, Space, Mosaics or Microscale. For International Women’s Day, we wanted to take a look at some of those groups through the lens of representation, but as I looked, one of the themes stood out to me the most… a theme where I searched high and low for female builders: trains. After searching around the globe through my network of AFOLs, I could still only count female LEGO train builders on the fingers of my two hands! (I hope to be proven wrong that there are more!) Top of the mornin’ to ya, brick-building aficionados! You don’t have to be Irish to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, so crack a set open (or maybe even a beer) and try your luck building this little guy.
