Let Anthony Wilson guide you on a trip back to the late ’90s with an inspiring take on the City Slizer (also known in North America as Turbo Throwbot). Turbo was my favorite in this brief precursor series to Bionicle, and to see a beautifully stylish upgrade makes me nostalgic. It’s the retrowave presentation, however, that completes Anthony’s radical remake. The addition of magenta accents and silver detailing is a bold choice for a remake. Along with the Hogwarts Great Hall set from Harry Potter revealed at the New York Toy Fair, today LEGO announced another new set from the upcoming movie Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The set will be called 75951 Grindelwald’s Escape and features a Thestral-pulled carriage, two minifigures of Gellert Grindelwald and Seraphina Picquery, and several new pieces. “Cute” isn’t a word you’d normally associate with the dystopian cyberpunk future envisioned in Blade Runner. However, that’s what comes to mind with automaton120‘s futuristic microscale LEGO street scene. The backdrop nicely evokes the neon-soaked architecture of cyberpunk-LA, but the stars of the show here are the vehicles. That police spinner is a cracking little model, and the others really capture the feel of the cars and trucks in the movie. The presentation of the model could have been better, maybe clipping the ugly sheet backdrop out of the image, and some image processing could have added lens flare to the signage and vehicle lights etc. But not every builder likes to add post-production effects, so that’s nit-picking at an otherwise cool LEGO creation. Organic shapes are surely some of the hardest to capture in LEGO bricks — leaving many builders to concentrate their efforts on structures and vehicles rather than animal forms. However, Joe Perez seems to be up for the challenge — his latest model is a lifelike and intimidating bull on the charge. The shaping is excellent here, with slightly exaggerated proportions that effectively convey a genuine sense of heft and menace. Joe has been slowly putting together an impressive series of creatures in this style. Disney Pixar’s Incredibles 2, the long-awaited sequel to one of Pixar’s most beloved films, is slated to be released in theatres June 15, 2018. We’re getting a look at the upcoming LEGO sets ahead of time, so do proceed with caution as there may be some spoiler scenes ahead. These sets are expected to be released in May 2018. The LEGO booth at Toy Fair this year only showcased one buildable or “constraction” figure, a new Darth Maul figure. Several other buildable figures from the spring 2018 wave have been revealed today, including Han Solo and the Range Trooper from the upcoming Han Solo movie. 75535 Han Solo – 101 pieces – $24.99 A young Han Solo gets the constraction figure treatment with a unique head, plus a large blaster rifle and blaster pistol. 75536 Range Trooper – 101 pieces – $24.99 The Range Trooper is a new, all-white stormtrooper variant with a helmet similar to the Shore Troopers in Rogue One. It’s usually a good idea to liven up the standard sci-fi grey builds with a few bright accent colours. Builder Chris Perron has taken that to another level with this mech build, which is half boring grey, and half of the brightest green LEGO makes. Aside from the colour difference, notice that the grey areas are relatively flat and uniform, while the green ones are more wild, using a tonne of little pieces to add in as much detail as possible. I see telephones, Bionicle masks and a lot of Hero Factory minifig legs built in here. There’s also an alien platen build for the mech to be posed on and a few soldiers to accompany it. After seeing some in-person views of the Hulkbuster: Ultron Edition at New York Toy Fair last month, like many of you we were keen to get our hands on 76105 The Hulkbuster: Ultron Edition as soon as possible. The set, based on Iron Man’s Hulkbuster armor seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron, includes 1,363 pieces and an exclusive Iron Man minifigure. I love when a builder takes an existing LEGO set and creates an alternative model. Dvd has gone one step further with his Exo-Recon Walker, using the parts from Peter Reid’s successful LEGO Ideas set #21109 Exo-Suit to recreate another of Peter’s designs, the Recon Walker.
