LEGO BrickHeadz 40466 Panda and cubs [Review]
The BrickHeadz theme has continued to branch out over the years to bring us everything from heroes and villains of the Marvel and DC universe to holiday characters, and most recently, a new sub-theme Pets. Today we’re taking a look at what I hope to see many more of, wild animal parents and their babies, LEGO BrickHeadz 40466 the Panda, and two cubs. The box and packaging
The set includes an adult panda (number 115), two baby panda cubs (116 and 117), a base for each baby, and one for the adult, which includes a tree with lanterns and another lantern on a post. This is similar to the holiday-themed Brickheadz. The front of the box shows the three pandas in front of the main stand. The back of the box shows each panda on its stand. The adult between the post and the tree, and the two babies. One sitting like the adult and the other laying on its back like a rolly-polly sticky bun.
Inside the box, there are 4 unnumbered bags of various sizes and 2 booklets, one for the adult and one for the two babies.
Parts of interest
With every BrickHeadz set, there are a bunch of bricks with studs on the side and this one includes them in light blueish gray and white. There are also some 1×1 brackets, some gold and red lantern parts, and a few small rounded parts for the baby ears.
The build
We’ll start with the adult panda. Unlike many of the holiday-themed BrickHeadz who sometimes seem more like people in animal costumes and are built standing up, this panda is sitting down. Aside from the seated posture, the rest of the adult is a fairly typical build, with the standard design for the hands, and a pink brick for the panda’s brain.
The rest of the adult panda is pretty simple, and there are no new or unique building techniques. The adult panda finishes with a base scene very similar to many of the aforementioned holiday BrickHeadz sets. This one features a small tree with orange blossoms and a couple of small lanterns with gold tassels. The other side features a black lampost with a larger lantern.
Now we come to what is likely the best part, and what is surely the biggest selling point of the set. Baby pandas! Unlike the Pets sub-theme which includes a single baby of each animal, the fact that this set includes 2 babies is hopefully a sign that LEGO intends to make more wild animal parent and child sets with multiples. The babies are built on a 3×3 base like other BrickHeadz characters of this size.
Another small detail I thought was pretty funny is that unlike the Pets infants, which use a pink 1×1 brick for the smaller brain, these pandas have a much smaller brain compared to the adult, at a single pink 1×1 plate. Each baby holds a small plant snack and comes with a stand designed to fit their postures.
The finished model
Once completed, the parts of the set can be arranged in any way you like, attached to their stands, or gathered together.
Conclusion and recommendations
This set would make a great addition to any BrickHeadz collection, and I sincerely hope that we see more wild animal families in the future. My only criticism is that I expected a slightly more integrated scene for the family to be displayed together, like the pet beds in some of the BrickHeadz Pets sets. The base for the adult fits other single-character holiday sets but leaves the babies on their stands isolated.
