Brickographie: Hidden Words in LEGO MOCs

Brickographie: Hidden Words in LEGO MOCs
Lokiloki Titre

Original MOC from lokiloki

At BrickNerd, we love writing and we love LEGO! Bailey Fullarton has already explored the different fonts and typography used by our favorite brick brand in a series of three fascinating articles, and just yesterday we read about a LUG collab that brings people together with a similar plan. So what would happen if you combine them into a challenge?

In March, builders in the French forum Brickpirate took part in a new BPchallenge. Members had to build a creation that contained brick-built letters, i.e., letters composed of LEGO parts. They were free to choose the theme, format, and scale.

As examples, a few official LEGO sets were mentioned, such as the signs for 10218 Pet Shop and 10260 Downtown Diner or the Avengers logo from 76269 Avengers Tower Battle.

The contest was so fun, and people were inspired to build words hidden inside their builds. Here are a few of the fun creations:

Arctic by Seb71

01 Seb71 Artcic

This first MOC gives a small, visible glimpse of climate change: the fragmentation of the ice pack and the loss of habitat for local wildlife. Letters are used here to represent icebergs. That brick-built whale is inspired!

Meteora by Gregory Coquelz aka Yatkuu

Greg takes us into a completely different realm with the cover of Linkin Park’s Meteora album. The shaping on the street artist character is particularly successful.

Happy Easter! by Antp

03 Antp egg 2.jpg

Antp takes this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy Easter. The timing was perfect, using tiles and quarter circle tiles for the lettering.

Adding a bow made from Dots bracelets up top completed the look with just a dash of whimsy.

Jungle by Ilive

04 Ilive

Ilive takes us into its lush jungle, where the lettering subtly reminds us of the place by means of creepers hidden among the foliage and rockwork. I almost had to look twice to see what it spelled!

“One word to win” by Antha

05 Antha

Antha invites us to play with this reproduction of the famous Scrabble game. The lettering is very faithful to the original game and the MOC is upsized to make it seem so real. I find this proposal particularly intelligent. So simple and effective!

In search of the brick by Legonoblois

06 Legonoblois

Legonoblois tells the story of two adventurers who venture into the depths of a cave in search of a famous brick... But which brick is it? Will they survive the expedition? Did you notice the hidden cave?

DinoTrackers by Zed

07 Zed

Lastly, we see some Dino Trackers who just found a new species lying somewhere in the ground! The bones were in a strange shape…

This build is a fun take on the challenge. And all the bones are actually fixed in place by Zed, not just loose. The MOC can be turned upside down without damage.

07 Zed Croquis

As a bonus, Zed offers us a glimpse of the drawing he made beforehand. It’s always very interesting to see this kind of behind-the-scenes planning, as we saw from Magda’s Shed.

Hidden Words

The French pirates from Brickpirate each contributed their own original and equally varied proposals for this competition. Internally at the group, voting is underway to decide the winner, but which is your favorite?

What word would you hide in a LEGO build? Let us know your favorite build in the comments below!
