Crafty AFOLs leave their minifigs (and us) in stitches [Minfig Monday]
Since we started spotlighting minifig creations again on Minifig Mondays, we’ve been introduced to so many talented AFOLs. After covering desert sands and dieselpunk in our last installments, maybe it’s time to welcome some cozier fig creations into the mix? Grab your knitting needles and garden shears, as we’re going to explore DIY minifig fashions! The fist time the brothers brick featured minifigs wearing crocheted clothes was back in 2006! Sadly, that was the only time. Let’s fix this with a Minifig Monday dedicated to minfigs dressed in knitted and floral clothing! Because hobbies are better when you let them mingle.
Kim Schol is a LEGO photographer from the Netherlands who sets her minifig subjects in dioramas that blend LEGO with nature and crafts. Kim dresses her minifig in a fantastically elegant skirt made of real flower petals. This fairy tale scene is one of my favorites in the way that LEGO foliage mixes with seed tufts and moss to create a magical space. Here’s a glimpse of how the mix of materials came together to make a scene.
LEGO may have treated minifigs with hair as an April Fools prank, but Kim plays around with minifig hair any day of the year. Here she uses flowers not just for the skirt for a hat as well.
Hailing from the Czech Republic, Jana also has a knack for integrating flowers as fashions for minifigures. Let’s be honest, LEGO’s official dress element isn’t nearly as stylish as the rest of minifig costuming options. Jana has a knack for pairing flower and fig for a runway ready look.
Even minidolls get the floral fashion treatment!
Sleeps With LEGO is a creator who focuses on sigfig adventures. Sigfig refers to a builder’s minifigure avatar, and Sleeps With LEGO’s sigfig always wears a hand crocheted coat. Sleeps’ feed is a nonstop series of delightful guest appearances from friends sigfigs, who sometimes get their own crocheted accessories, like this summer seasonal tuktuk with zabadak dropping by.
Occasionally a non-sigfig guest will drop by, like Sitch here, who shares an egg treat with Sleeps and bettylovesbricks. Even Stich gets gifted a crocheted coat. Stitch in stitches!
Sara is a creator who works mostly with needle and thread and applied her skills to design minifig-scale fashions. She even shared instructions for making the beautiful dress that Jasmine models below.
Finally, TBB team member Kimberly Giffen worked minifig knitting into her latest diorama. Nothing wearable yet, but barring any cats running off with the yarn, maybe her sigfig will get a sweater soon enough. (shout out to that NPU for the scratching post!)
Cocoro Yu is another builder whose crafted fashions I recommend checking out. Are there other creators mixing LEGO and crafts that you recommend? Have you ever created clothing or accessories for your minifigs from non-LEGO-like materials yourself? Tell us about it in the comments!
