Today’s guest article comes from Casey McCoy, an AFOL from Chicago. You can find him online on Flickr and Instagram. The Decade of Awesome Today on BrickNerd, we’re continuing our retrospective on our very own Simon Liu—an AFOL whose reputation precedes him. If you missed our last article: Go back and read it! To recap, we learned about his early life origins, early days in the AFOL world, and how a LEGO fan convention experience from over a decade ago inspired him to go on and lead his own part of the LEGO community. When we left off, Simon was using his Brickworld Master 2012 title as a blank check of goodwill to do a whole lot of awesome for the LEGO community over the next decade. Now, Simon has done a ton of incredible things in his LEGO career, and if I sat here and talked about all of them,...

Over the last few weeks, I was faced with a decision that I’ve been both dreading and yet knew was necessary. That is, to “retire” my first and most ambitious LEGO train layout called “Fareham.” Occupying a little over 13.8 sq. m (150 sq. ft), it was consuming valuable basement real estate, which was needed for other priorities. Therefore, the decision was taken to pack and store Fareham indefinitely. As an homage to this beloved and important layout project, I thought it would be nice to review and reflect on this layout and its significance to me. Background Before I became an active LEGO train fan, I was a scale model train hobbyist. I’ve built model trains and layouts in various scales, such as OO, HO, and N scale. My main interest was British trains from the 1970s and 1980s, as I remembered them from my youth; more specifically, from the...

There’s only a few hours left for Amazon Prime Days 2024 and the last LEGO set I want to highlight is the LEGO Star Wars Ghost & Phantom II (75357). It is currently 20% off and priced at $127.99 which saves you $32 on it. This set is the most recent version of the two ships and includes minifigures of General Hera Syndulla, Lt. Beyta, Jacen Syndulla, First Officer Hawkins, and Chopper (C1-10P). As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. The annual Bionicle building competition Bio-Cup is nearly over. The semifinals end in a few days, and then it will be down to the last three competitors to battle it out for the first-place title. If you don’t know about Bio-Cup yet, it’s the largest LEGO constraction building contest with over 150 entries that all get narrowed down to one victor in a tournament-style competition. Each round has a unique theme and lasts two weeks, with builders in groups of three or four battling head-to-head to move on to the next round. With great prizes on the line, such as sealed sets, custom resin cast masks, and cash, it’s no surprise this contest brings out the absolute best in everyone. This year, I want to look at four builders who really excelled in this year’s competition and, I think, took a few people by surprise with their amazing builds. Micellanabuilds Many...

Duh-nuh. Duh-nuh. Duh-NUH! Source: LEGO Jaws (1975) redefined what a movie could be. It set the tone of summer blockbusters for decades to come and put Steven Spielberg on the map as an esteemed director. Could the newest Ideas set do the same for LEGO? 21350 Jaws is a fun, interesting, and detailed set with loads of interesting techniques and parts usage, including a new string Mixel ball element. Here at BrickNerd, when The LEGO Group offers us a set to look at, we like to go above and beyond the standard review—whether it’s seeking expert opinions, modding sets to be even better, or testing out delightfully absurd ideas. So I asked my kids what they thought was the most interesting thing we could do together with the Jaws set, and the oldest one said, “Well, it’s a boat, right? Does it float? Can you make it float?” Can I Make...

Today’s guest article comes from Scott Bowman, an engineer and racing official who founded ideaBRICKworks, who is taking an expert look at the 42172 Technic McLaren P1 on BrickNerd’s behalf. An Engineer and a Racing Expert I have been a fan of LEGO my whole life but only started seriously building in 2013. Ironically, it was the same year that the P1 came out. Since then, I have been heavily involved in LUGs, helping to start two of them in Iowa and Idaho; doing large community build projects involving kids at the Science Center of Iowa and STEM Moon Shot; building lots of sets; MODing lots of sets; and of course, creating lots and lots of MOCs. I am also a BrickNerd Patron (because why wouldn’t you want to support them?). But I don’t think that is why I came to their mind when LEGO offered them the 42172 Technic McLaren...

Dungeons & Dragons will be at San Diego Comic Con 2024 and it looks like there will be some LEGO related content happening there. At Booth #3213 throughout the weekend, there will be some recent releases on display including LEGO which most likely will be the Red Dragon’s Tale (21348) but it also mentions there will be upcoming releases on display. Perhaps there will be a sneak peek at the upcoming LEGO Dungeons & Dragons Collectible Minifigures Series which is scheduled to be coming in September. I’ll swing by to check out what’s going on there and report back. Come visit Booth #3213 on the exhibit hall floor to check out upcoming releases on display, including Quests from the Infinite Staircase and The Making of Original Dungeons & Dragons: 1970-1977. In addition, we’ll have several great recent releases and show exclusives on display from partners such as Royal Mail, Super7, WizKids,...
